Once I had my first singing (voice) student, I needed supplies. I headed to a music retail store nearby. I had a great conversation with two women working there. I described to them what I was looking for and why. Unbeknownst to me, one of the women was the owner. We ended up discussing music education and teaching pedagogy (i.e. how to teach).
Before I left the store that day, the owner offered me a contract. She asked me to work for her 2 afternoons/evenings a week, teaching voice and piano lessons in the music studio portion of her business. I accepted the contract, but only for 1 afternoon/evening a week. By the end of October 2014, I not only had a student in my own studio, but I had landed a teaching contract without even trying. I was stunned and didn't have a clue where I was going! If you enjoyed this article, let me know. Post a comment! Like it! Tweet it! You may also want to read another article in this series:

One morning, early in October 2014, I went to get the mail. On my way home, I ran into a neighbor, pushing her son in his stroller. We stopped and talked.
We had a conversation about life, our careers and what we were currently learning. I told her about my own journey of music mastery in voice (singing) and piano. Before we parted company, she stated that if I ever wanted to teach her daughter voice lessons that her daughter would love lessons from me. Her daughter sang around the house all the time. For the rest of that day, all I could think about was teaching her beautiful daughter. Within 2 days, I took on her daughter as Eden-Smith Music's 1st student (a voice student) that October. The trust and confidence of one parent and one voice student set me on a path to owning my own business, something that I had never even dreamed about doing. If you enjoyed this article, let me know. In order to create the tagline for Eden-smith Music (Paradise of Music Mastery!), I researched the meanings associated with and the history of the names/words "Eden" and "Smith". Eden is associated with paradise, a perfect place. The word "perfect" has its origins in Latin and actually means complete, as in no parts missing, not free from error as we often use it today. Eden-Smith Music is not a place free of error, nor should it be. Eden-Smith Music is a place of learning so it should be a place where errors are welcome and can be made in safety and security.
"Smith" comes from blacksmith, a learned group of people who were and are masters of their trade. Because mastery is a process skill, not just a product, mastery is possible at all levels of musical development and along the musical journey. Once one level is achieved, or mastered, there is always another level above to work towards. This fact is true, both for my students and for me, Sharon Eden-Smith. The tagline, "Paradise of Music Mastery!", is a constant reminder that I am on the same musical journey of mastery with my students. I, too, must strive toward completeness on that journey. That is why Eden-Smith Music is "Paradise of Music Mastery!" If you enjoyed this article, let me know. Post a comment! Like it! Tweet it! You may also want to read another article in this series:

While I was contemplating the name for my business, I was, simultaneously, working on a logo design. The design needed to be symbolic of music and of me. The logo had to be simple and I wanted it in black & white.
I settled on the treble clef. The treble clef is probably one of the most well known symbols in music. It was also the very first staff that I learned to read. It comprises most of what I do in music. It often contains the melody line for piano or electronic keyboard and for voice (singing). I chose the dove with the olive branch in its mouth, seen in my logo above, to represent the idea of peace. I want my studio to be a peaceful place for learning, a safe place of learning. Peace helps to create hope for music mastery. Hope, in turn, can contribute to the potential joy experienced during that journey toward music mastery. If you enjoyed this article, let me know. The reason why my studio is called Eden-Smith Music seems obvious; after all, I am Sharon Eden-Smith. However, the process in choosing the name was not that simple or easy.
Music provides many spectacular words to describe the process of creating music, of learning and of performing. My journal was filled with many possible names and their corresponding meanings. As I examined each, I kept returning to the question... "Who am I and what do I want my business to stand for?" No musical term or other name captured the totality of me and what I wanted to create. There was always a piece missing; like in a puzzle, where that one missing piece stops one from enjoying the full beauty of the complete picture. I returned repeatedly to my name, Eden-Smith, but never settled on the name. My guiding light finally shone bright in the words and wisdom of a friend. We were having dinner, discussing my business. She told me that the name Eden-Smith encompassed my past, my present and my future in one simple name. To her, calling my studio, Eden-Smith Music, just made sense! The truth of her words sunk in and I named my studio, Eden-Smith Music. If you enjoyed this article, let me know. Post a comment! Like it! Tweet it!
